Plot

The movie revolves around the life of an American physicist, J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy), known as the Father of the atomic bomb. He is responsible for making the Manhattan Project a success during World War II.

The project was a top-secret research and development program to develop the first nuclear weapons.

The story begins in 1926, a 22-year-old J. Robert grappled with homesickness at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge. Niels Bohr advises him to go to Göttingen to complete his PhD, where he meets fellow scientist Isidor Isaac Rabi. J. Robert wants to expand quantum physics.

After discovering nuclear fission in 1938, J. Robert realized it could be weaponized, leading to his involvement in the Manhattan Project. He was appointed as director of the Los Alamos Laboratory, where an atomic bomb is to be developed.

The film highlights his leadership and collaboration with scientists like Enrico Fermi, Leo Szilard, Edward Teller and David L. Hill. Teller made some calculations and revealed that atomic detonation could trigger a catastrophic chain reaction that ignites the atmosphere.

Robert consulted with Albert Einstien regarding this and concluded that the chances are very low.

The successful Trinity test and subsequent bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 haunt J. Robert, who grapples with guilt. After seeing the destruction, he famously quoted “Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds” from Bhagavad Gita.
